Summary on Grant Application Form |
In cavity QED the atom and cavity field are strongly coupled, so strong, that this effect dominates all others and for the duration of the interaction the system becomes an ideal, dissipation free quantum system. This effect is strongest in the microwave regime. Currently there are two experiments in microwave cavity QED, one explores field created by the masing action of single atoms, and one explores the phase properties of single atoms in a cavity. Combining these two is not trivial, requiring a huge cavity decay time and the ability to hold maintain atomic coherence across the cavity. The one atom maser is the only system currently capable of producing a quantum field inside the cavity. Thus the goal of the current experiment is to construct an apparatus involving the combined effect of atomic coherence experiments and the one atom maser. This involves the technical problem of removal of stray fields at the entrance holes to the cavity that act to destroy atomic coherence. The apparatus proposed here would be at the cutting edge of modern quantum optics, enabling experimental realisations of effects that are currently only theoretical concepts.
