Summary on Grant Application Form
4.1 A complete method for the interrogation of working catalysts should simultaneously determine (i) product evolution/reactant uptake, (ii) the species present at the catalyst surface, and (iii) the local structure of catalytically active components.By combining rapid scanning, Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy in Diffuse Reflectance mode, with Energy Dispersive EXAFS and mass spectrometry, we will develop a methodology for simultaneously interrogating supported catalyst performance, the chemical identity of species present at the catalyst surface, and the active phase of the catalyst. Moreover, this methodology will have an intrinsic time resolution of a few seconds allowing detailed investigation of catalyst performance in both frequency response and transient modes. This methodology will be widely applicable to problems in heterogeneous catalysis but also to a wide variety of areas in solid state and materials chemistry where phase/functional group changes in or on solids are of importance.
