This project investigates a critical and urgent problem - Available Transfer Capability (ATC) computation with FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) controllers in power systems, which will be of immediate interest to the electricity companies and the public. A key concept in the restructuring of the electric power industry is the ability to accurately and rapidly quantify the available transfer capabilities of the transmission system. Determination of ATC is a very important task for operation and operational planning of electric power systems in a competitive electricity market environment.This project will investigate a novel comprehensive ATC compuation methodology, which should eliminite the deficiencies of the current methods, Le.(a) lack of sophisticated models and algorithms for various FACTS controllers; (b) lack of couplings between base case and contingencies; (c) lack of adequate consideration of reactive power/voltage effects and/or voltage stability effects; (d) lack of quantifying the impact of FACTS on ATC. This work is to establish a sound theoretical foundation and to develop sophisticated computational tools for determination of ATC with FACTS controllers in operation and operational planning of power systems.
