Preliminary investigations of a composite of dry tendon fibres and gelatin have shown that it is very tough and damage tolerant, absorbing similar amounts of energy to carbon fibre composites, although its tensile modulus and strength are much lower. This material is made from natural renewable resources and has the potential to be cheap and re-cyclable and therefore should be of interest to the composites industry.In this project we will investigate the mechanisms responsible for the observed toughness and damage tolerance, through a work programme of mechanical testing, microscopy and modelling. We will attempt to stiffen and strengthen the composite by adding plant fibres and to waterproof the gelatin by a process of tanning. The application of the findings to synthetic composites will also be considered.
