Summary on Grant Application Form
We have a unique facility for measuring ground and isomeric state properties of radioactive nuclei. We wish to capitalise on the developments of the past few years to answer specific questions in nuclear physics. While doing so we will seek every opportunity to further enhance the sensitivity and range of applicability of our experimental techniques, so that the physics investigated is determined more by the intrinsic interest rather than the limitations of our methods. We are keen to look at new areas such as the investigation of the properties of isomers produced by alpha-decay. Of particular interest is the 229mTh isomer which is predicted to decay by a novel electron bridge mechanism. We are in an excellent position to help with the development of radioactive beam facilities by studying polarization and trapping in the cooler.
