Summary on Grant Application Form
The Sussex Centre for Optical and Atomic Physics (SCOAP) has been among the first to develop microscopic magnetic guides and traps for cold atoms. This subject is of fundamental interest for the study of degenerate quantum gases in confined spaces. It is also extremely promising as the basis of a new technology harnessing the controlled flow and interaction of cold atoms: atom chips . In particular it provides a possible way to implement the ideas of quantum computing. The central obstacle in the laboratory now is preparation of the atoms in a single quantum state of vibration. This can be achieved by evaporative cooling, but we need much larger initial cold atom clouds. We are requesting a Nd:YAG-pumped Ti: S laser system to make this possible. We also need to introduce fardetuned optical trapping forces into our atom chips so that we can work with all the magnetic sublevels. This could have been been achieved with our existing ring dye laser but unfortunately its old Ar+ pump laser tube has failed. We are therefore asking for a second Nd:YAG pump laser. With these two systems providing large cold atom clouds and optical dipole forces, our experiments on microscopic traps and guides will be able to continue compete strongly in the international race for integrated atom interferometers and quantum logic gates.
