Summary on Grant Application Form |
For many years ORC has been the flagship of the UK's optical fibre research. This position is based on our ability to produce novel optical fibre. It is crucial that we are able to produce the optical fibre since this allows our researchers working on fibre devices and applications to optimise the fibre to their precise needs. Without this facility, most of the world-class research that the ORC produces would not be possible. Our current optical fibre preform fabrication systems are now so old that they are no longer supported by the manufacturer and therefore spare parts are no longer available. This situation has lead to us making the best repairs we can which unfortunately do not maintain the quality and safety of the system. This has lead to a gradual decline in the quality and reproducibility of the fibre and now prevents some of the facilities of the MCVD systems being used at all. Consequently, in order for the ORC to maintain its world-leading position in telecommunication and optical fibre research it is necessary to replace one of the failing MCVD systems.
