Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a highly novel and practical superconducting coated conductor (CC) processing route called sol-LPE. It involves using a near-eutectic flux precursor composition with rare earth (RE) incorporation in the flux either as RE203 nano-precipitates or as a surface RE-rich layer. Diffusion of RE to the substrate surface through the flux layer will allow growth of the REBCO epitaxially on the substrate. The precursor for the flux can be fabricated by a simple chemical solution powder route or aerosol route. The work will involve development of the precursors as well as proof-of-principle demonstration of a coated conductor test-piece. The route has elements of both liquid phase epitaxy and the vapour-liquid-solid (vls) route which has recently been reported by two groups in Japan. Its advantages are a) its scaleability and b) its high growth rate
