Pathological conditions associated with hard tissues and their correction are key problems for resourcing the future social and healthcare needs. In particular, the structural arrangement of these tissues, which includes the interfaces that are created when they are replaced, has a profound affect on functionality. Recent developments in the use of microcomputed tomography allow the laboratory assessment of structure in a non-destructive manner relatively quickly. The acquisition of the MicroCT 80 (Scanco Medical AG) would underpin a number of existing research themes and allow the development of new ones within the internationally recognised fields of medical engineering, medical imaging and bone and body composition at the University of Leeds. Two research domains will benefit principally; 1) use of novel material, procedures and devices in the correction and assessment of disease and/or trauma induced pathologies, and-2) assessment of tissue quality in the prediction and prevention of hard-tissue related ill-health. These themes will further strengthen the multidisciplinary research between the NHS and the University in line with Foresight `Health Care', `Age shift' and the NHS `Priority and Needs' strategy recommendations as well as further realising the potential for widening the collaborative projects on a regional, national and international level. In addition, the equipment will provide a platform to further develop research staff and train PhD and Masters Level students.
