Summary on Grant Application Form |
The goal of this research is to improve the effciency of manufacturing processess (e.g. milling) by enhancing the dynamic properties of the dynamic properties of the workpiece. The approach will be to use active constrained layer damping devices, which have the potencial to adapt automatically their behaviour to suit the changing properties of the maching system. This approach would be particularly effective in reducing chatter when the workplace is thin walled and difficult to machine, as is the case with many aerospace components. As the workpiece is machined, its damping and stiffness will change (since its shape is being modified). Also the point of excitation (i.e. the tool) will move across the workpiece surface, which may excite different modes of vibration in the workpiece. Adapting the control strategy during the machining process could compensate for both of these factors. This research has the potential to develop exciting new applications for smart materials, active vibration dissipation, and adaptive control. The initial work that is required is relatively high risk and well suited to an academic study, but should provide a basis for more industrially relevant research producing closer links with industry. It is therefore ideally suited to the author's fast stream proposal.
