The conversion of simple aromatic molecules into more heavily functionalised, higher value molecules represent transformations of considerable economic significance. This proposal concerns the tailoring of novel lanthanide catalysts (MX3) for electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions with anhydrides, epoxides or aldehydes to provide aryl ketones andhydroxyalkylarenes derivatives respectively. The catalysts are designed to be water tolerant, fluorous-phase soluble, or immobilised and thereby easily recyclable. It is the goal of this research to prepare diverse aromatic speciality chemicals using lanthanide(III) and related catalysts in reactions that liberate no acidic or inorganic waste streams and therefore to provide the basis of clean manufacturing processes. The catalysis will be extended subsequently to other pivotal carboncarbon and carbon-heteroatom forming reactions including Wagner-Meerwein rearrangements, Nazarov cyclisations, KochHaaf reactions, pinacol-pinacolone rearrangements and the conversion of alkenes into polyfunctional sulfoxides.This research depends crucially upon infra-red spectroscopy to follow the course of reactions, in tracking reactive intermediates and in-process optimisation. The ReactIR spectrometer in this proposal is urgently needed to underpin research at the Chemistry-Chemical Engineering interface.
