The aim of the project will be to synthesise new complex oxide structures containing triangular beryllate (Be03) groups. These materials are likely to have optical properties consistent with applications such as SHG in high power, short wavelength laser systems. Synthesis work will concentrate on obtaining new phases in the Be/(Ga,In,Sc)/O/A(I,II) and Be/(Ti,Zr,Sn)/O/A(I,II) systems. Materials will be characterised using appropriate structural methods (X-ray single crystal/ powder neutron diffraction) and through preliminary measurement of optical properties such as NLO and SHG effects.
