The RUSTI facility at CLRC Daresbury Laboratory is equipped with a world class electron spectrometer, a Scienta ESCA300. This is used by a large number of University (and industrial) research groups in a wide variety of fields. This collaborative application, from Dr G Beamson (Daresbury) and three of the principal users of the spectrometer; Professor P Weightman (University of Liverpool) and Professors Watts and Tsakiropoulos (University of Surrey), seeks to develop a novel high energy X-ray source (WLa1) for the ESCA300. This source, combined with the existing high energyelectron analyser, will provide unique capabilities for the electron spectroscopy of materials. Once commisioned, the new source will be made available to academic and industrial researchers by way of the well-established user programme. The WLa1 x-ray source will enable deep core photoelecton lines (such as Fe1s and Ni1s) and their associated Kll Auger transitions to be recorded for the first time. The source will be used by the investigators assocaited with this proposal for a broad research programme aimed at a more complete understanding of the electronic structure of steels, and other alloys, and the study of buried interfaces in semiconductor materials.T
