Summary on Grant Application Form |
We aim to adapt the powerful technique of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to study the solidification of multi-component fluids. The effects of convective motions due to compositional differences resulting from the general case of only some of the components of the melt being incorporated into the fluid will be included. The SPH technique uses an interpolation procedure to transform the governing continuum equations, expressed as a set of partiala differential equations, to a set of equations for the motion of a (large) series of particles. This technique has been shown to be very powerful and efficient for a range of problems. The aim of the current application is to bring the originator of the technique, Professor J.J. Monaghan of Monash University, Australia, to Great Britain in order for him to learn about solidification problems from the PI and to impart his knowledge of the SPH technique to the PI and members of his research group. Once developed, the numerical programs will be capable of studying numerous situations and geometries in the solidification of multi-component fluids, some of which will have large industrial significance.
