Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal seeks funding for the establishment of an Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC) at the University of Nottingham. This will address current and future drivers and imperatives of manufacturing industry within a number of research themes based on the current research portfolio and expertise of the Nottingham team. Advances in manufacturing competitiveness will be achieved through innovative research to develop a fundamental understanding of processes and equipment. This will allow a variety of manufacturing processes to be developed and deployed within an optimised manufacturing environment. Whilst the centre will be flexible and will allow new initiatives to be developed, specific research themes are likely to include: responsive manufacturing; planning, scheduling and control (PSC) in the extended enterprise; adaptive planning for machining of complex parts; metal forming; automated manufacture of large compliant structures; low pressure processing techniques for large structures; effects of manufacturing on mechanical performance of textile composites; manufacture and design of hybrid polymer composite structures. The bulk of the current application for core funding is for manpower to conduct research into the priority themes over the next 5 years. Significant funding for consumables, equipment and travel will also be required to support these diverse activities. Significant industrial support is expected across all activities, as discussed in the separate Case for Support.
