Summary on Grant Application Form
The development of engineering models of rotor aerodynamics has been based upon the assumption that forces and moments acting on the blade can be determined from a strip analysis in which it is assumed that the three-dimensional aerodynamics of the blade can be determined by integrating the sectional characteristics of the individual blade elements across the span. The aerodynamic behaviour of individual blade elements is determined by considering the performance of an equivalent infinite swept wing. The objective of the work described in the present proposal is to investigate the validity of this approach for the complex time dependent aerodynamics of rotor blades. A comprehensive series of computational experiments is proposed to assess the influence of sweep on the aerodynamics of wings oscillated in all three rigid body modes of motion (pitch, heave and in-plane). The role that spanwise flow arising from sweep has in modifying the indicial response of individual blade elements will also be explored. The work seeks to improve our ability to model the effects of sweep on rotor aerodynamics within engineering level rotor load predicition methods.
