Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme looks into two complementary issues relating to polymer recycling. The first seeks to identify the degradation history of a polymer sample after an unknown exposure to a hazardous environment; the second to relate this to its future use.The first strand looks to develop a novel method to identify the degradation history of a polymer by using the mixtures of unsaturated hydrocarbon/carbonyl species as a fingerprint. A series of thermal and photo-chemical histories will be produced and characterized for an integrated range of macromolecular alkenes with different levels of tertiary hydrogen. Access to a range of related materials will provide the key to recognition of the degradation artefacts. The second programme looks into the issue of whether recyclates that have undergone previous degradation act as pro-degradants when reprocessed bkended with virgin material. Characterization of materials undergoing controlled artificial weathering will be undertaken, providing both samples and data for both programmes.
