|
For many years researchers have investigated applications of parallel and distributed computing within the context of the decision support technique simulation model. This has given rise to the research field of distributed simulation. The major contribution of this field thus far if the IEEE 1516 standard High Level Architecture. The standard is aimed at generating cost savings in the simulation community by promoting the reuse and interoperation of simulation models. Initial research performed by members of the Centre for Applied Simulation Modelling (Brunel University), the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technical University has indicated that this standard is unsuitable in its current form for many applications of simulation modelling. These are applications that have been developed using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) simulation modelling packages. In order for industries (manufacturing, service etc.) to benefit fro interoperability and reuse suggested by the High Level Architecture, further work is required to determine how systems defined by this standard can be bridged into some form that is usable by COTS simulation modelling. To continue this research, overseas travel funding is therefore being sought for a number of visits of personnel from Brunel University to Singapore.
