Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is a collaborative LINK project involving Sheffield University, MicroEmissive Displays Ltd (a company engaged in commercialising full-colour organic microdisplays) and Exitech Ltd (a laser machining company). The objective of this proposal is the development of a full-colour microdisplay based on electroluminescence from three different conjugated polymers, emitting either red, green or blue light The core of the proposal is based around the development of commercial excimer-laser machining technology to pattern thin films of conjugated polymers. We will develop a novel route to use laser ablation to pixellate a substrate with three different conjugated polymers allowing discreet emissive pixels to be created, each having a diameters of 10 micrometers. Our approach relies on photo-ablating protective resist layers, and then infilling the ablated regions with a conjugated polymer thin film via spin-coating. We propose to develop the patterning technology, and then to fabricate a prototype full-colour, high-density microdisplay, using CMOS circuitry to individually address each pixel within the display. The new technology that we will develop will eliminate the need for complex and low-yield chemical process steps, while at the same time producing a microdisplay product with significantly improved power efficiency and enhanced optical resolution.
