A new approach to the allylation of prochiral ketones that uses mixtures of organotin reagents has been identified in our laboratory. Preliminary results (the first 5 substrates chosenl) all show enantioselectivities of 80-90% e.e. at catalyst loadings of 9-20 mol%. The selectivity and activity of this new catalyst appears to be better that any competitor science we can identify. On the basis of these preliminary results we propose to identify the scope and utility of the present reaction and to seek for even higher selectivities and for related processes (additions to !mines and related species). This chemistry will be used in the synthesis of natural products derived from Aspergillus Sydowi and Parahigginsia sp and in the preparation of potent platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonists. The mechanisms of the catalytic reactions are to be probed by spectroscopic and density function calculation approaches.
