Professor Narlikar will work in collaboration withe a research student, Michael Hogg, on to combined STM and AFM in the Materials science Dpartment. The object will be to improve the resolution of this equipment to atomic resolution, Prof Narlikar has done in his previous laboratory. The experiemnts will then detemine the detailed effet of impurities on the structure and electrical properties of grain boundaries. In particular the effect of calcium doping in YBCO and the grain boundaries of Magnesium Diboride will be investigated. The bestclues are likely to come from measuremens of local resistivity and density of states close to the boundary.
