Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim is to provide a cost-effective tool to predict the response of loaded composite structures to any type of fire. This involves the development of a cost-effective small-scale technique to generate data on structures under load. A composite fire model will be extended to predict the behaviour of structures such as beams and columns under load, allowing for factors such as resin depletion, ablation and thermally induced strains. Pultruded and resin infused sections will be characterised under load using this methodology. This work will be complemented by studies of fire-damaged laminates, to refine and improve knowledge of the mechanisms of degradation in fire.Characterisation of composite sections in fire requires structures to be exposed to a known reproducible surface temperature profile or a reproducible heat flux. This project will employ both procedures for comparison. The known temperature-time profile will be applied by a small gas-driven furnace. The heat flux will be applied by a carefully controlled and calibrated gas burner rig, with the flame impinging on the surface of a flat sample or section. The behaviour of structures under load will be studied in flexure.
