Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of a new technique of experimental stress analysis is proposed. The technique can be considered to be a combination of thermography and moirk and has been named 'thermal moire'. The technique operates in the infrared spectrum, and involves the temporary imprinting a thermal grating onto the object of interest, and subsequent observation of the movement and, or distortion of the grating, either with or without a reference grating. The technique is effected to require no surface preparation, to be non-destructive, and to be sensitive to both in-plane and out-of-plane displacements. The proposal requests funds to develop and validate the underlying theory for the new technique, to design and construct a laboratory apparatus, and to demonstrate the technique and apparatus. The non-contact and non-invasive nature of the new technique promises to provide a wide range of applications including the measurement of strain in living tissues, and the inspection of materials such as paper, glass and rubber during production.
