Summary on Grant Application Form
The International Conference on the Phyiscs of Semiconductors is the premier international conference, held every two years since 1950, that attracts all physicists (from the basic to the applied, theoretical experimental and simulation-oriented) across the entire gamut of semiconductor physics. There are typically 1000-1200 attendees, and only the highest quality work is accep:P~. The conference has only twice before been held in the UK, in Reading in 1954 and Edinburgh in 1978. The plenary speakers are chosen to cover the most exciting developments, and invited speakers in parallel sessions are mainly younger scientists who have made important recent discoveries. There is major progress at present on microcavity radiation, quantum coherence phenomena and few electron effects (both optical and electronic) which will be ready for report. The subject underpins the entire IT revolution, and at this point in time, with blue lasers, quantum microwave devices and major problems with ultrasmall silicon devices, the scope of new physics that may have multi-billion dollar economic consequences is unparalleled in the last decade. The grant will support the attendance of international plenary and invited speakers, and increase the number of young UK scientists who can attend.
