Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol was recently awarded the largest ever engineering JIF grant to provide infrastructure for the study of the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of real engineering structures - BLADE: the Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamic Engineering. This proposal is a direct response to this investment; it aims to provide human resources to address the mathematical themes distilled from the engineering challenge of real-time dynamic substructuring that is at the heart of BLADE, for which the Investigators have a unique and appropriate track record. The mathematical themes are (A) Dynamical systems with delays. (B) Dynamics of piecewise smooth systems, (C) Qualitative numerical analysis of highdimensional nonlinear systems, and (D) Modelling spatially extended systems: continuous versus discrete.Building on the group's interdisciplinary base, resources an: requested to: (1) appoint five RAs in a rolling programme over 5 years to work on specific projects within each theme and the grand engineering challenge of real-time dynamic substructuring that straddles the four themes, (2) host a series of structured visits from international leading experts, (3) organise a series of workshops and intense visitor periods centred on the themes.
