Adhesively bonded components and structures are of current interest in many technological applications. However, the adoption of adhesively bonded joints in structural applications is inhibited by a lack of confidence in current stress analysis and failure prediction methods. Stress distributions in even simple bonded joints are complex and hence commonly caculated using Finite Element Methods (FEM). However, these predicted stress distributions are rarely checked experimentally. Some attempts have been made to validate FEM predictions using moire and speckle interferometry but to date these have been of low resolution, and since interior measurements (close to bond line) cannot be made with these techniques, confidence in the calculated interior stress is not high. The current proposal seeks to verify the accuracy and applicability of current FEM by making direct measurements of styrains in the interior of loaded and unloaded adhesively bonded joints and simultaneously making high resolution surface strain measurements using the newly developed High Resolution Interferometry (HRMI) method. FEM calculations will be based on the measured properties of the joint components. Predicted and measured strain distributions will be compared for a number of joint configurations and the results used to verify and/or improve the current Finite Element Methods.
