Medium permittivity, high dielectric Q value ceramics are required as resonators in based stations for mobile telephone systems. There is a growing industrial interest in perovskite structured niobate ceramics for such applications. This proposal is concerned with model systems based on Ba(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3(BZN) and related materials, whose dielectric properties exhibit opposite temperature dependencies. Characterisation of ceramics prepared with powders of different quality will define tolerance levels to impurities and processing conditions. Starting with end-member perovskites that exhibit opposite temperature dependencies mixed compositions will be prepared that yield (i) single phase or (ii) two phase products. These will be characterized in detail (SEM, TEM, Impedance Spectroscopy, IR and far IR spectroscopy) to define microscopic and mesoscopic microstructure. Using for the first time simultaneous X-ray and electrical property measurements at elevated pressure and/or temperature, the structural changes controlling changes in dielectric properties will be investigated. High resolution X-ray diffraction will be performed to define structures for simulation studies. In order to underpin the experimental studies, simulation studies of structures for specific dielectric properties to be identified.
