Conventionally, simple laminar plug flow is used to model microchannel reactors. It is very likely that there will be occasions when strong radial temperature and or concentration gradients together with stratified flow will be set up - examples include strongly exothermal reactions, strong sidewall heating, liquid liquid extraction for product recovery. These gradients, which have not been studied either theoretically or experimentally in microchannels, will promote internal convection patterns in the flow. These will have an important impact on our ability to control precisely the reaction conditions in the microchannel. Although theoretical modelling is possible by extension of the work of the PI and others, experimental measurement requires the development if a new technique itself of tremendous benefit in the general understanding microchannel flows - MICRO-PIV. This has been undertaken at only one or two labs worldwide and nowhere to our knowledge in Europe. We request funding to demonstrate theoretically the feasibility of using such flows to enhance mixing and/or separation in practical microchannel systems and to develop MICRO-PIV for the first time in the UK whilst investigating the feasibility of its use for quantifying convective flows.
