Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme of research is aimed at developing innovative foundation ideas for offshore wind energy applications. Shallow inverted buckets, installed by suction, are considered as a viable alternative to conventional piled solutions. Considerable uncertainty surrounds the performance of these foundations when subjected to cyclic loading in the offshore environment. The work will build on previous studies focusing on the performance of foundations for the offshore oil and gas sector, but will be specifically devoted to the very different loading regime that is appropriate for wind energy applications. Small scale model tests will be used to provide data on the performance of caissons under appropriate loading. This study is a stand alone project on the underpinning science of the performance of caissons, but it is hoped that in fact it will form part of a much larger (1.9M) project sponsored principally by the DTI. The larger project will include field studies and theoretical developments leading through into establishment of design methodologies for caisson foundations in this area.
