Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to investigate the deposition (in vacuum) of ionised, size-selected clusters on well-defined surfaces, such that the clusters are stable against diffusion at room temperature (i.e., pinned to the surface), and to explore the subsequent functionalisation of such monodispersed systems by reaction in the liquid phase. It is envisaged that, in future, such functionalised monodispersed nanoclusters may act as binding sites for individual molecules (e.g., proteins) with size similar to the clusters, i.e., 1-10 run. For comparison, it is proposed to attempt to produce and deposit beams of ionised, passivated clusters, originally created in solution.
