Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is to experimentally identify and characterize new paradigms of collective quantum behaviour in strongly correlated systems, in particular investigate quantum magnets with frustrated interactions, strong anisotropies and non-commuting fields that have the potential to exhibit novel types of quantum order and collective excitations. The novel experimental approach is based on using high applied magnetic fields to externally control the ground-state fluctuations and induce quantum phase transitions and use neutron scattering to probe the static and dynamic correlations of those phases. Experiments use the latest developments in neutron technology, extreme sample environment and data analysis. The proposed research include: quantum criticality in a frustrated Ising system in transverse fields (CoNb206), nature of excitations and field-induced spin-liquid state in an anisotropic XY-like quantum magnet (CS2COCI4), entanglement of quantum and thermal fluctuations and effects of doping on a two-dimensional (2D) spin liquid with deconfined spinons (CS2CUCI4), and search for strongly-correlated quantum spin-liquid states in other 2D frustrated magnets with commensurate or incommensurate correlations (TIO(CI,Br), Li2V0(Ge,Si)04).
