Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal for multi-project research equipment is to establish a new high voltage (HV) test capability within the Diagnostics Laboratory at Strathclyde University. The items requested are a 100kV AC supply and a digital partial discharge measurement system. The supply will be rated at 25kVA to allow testing of capacitive loads up to 10nF, such as sections of HV cable. A new test bay will be created adjacent to a screened room that will house the control and measurement apparatus. The test facility will be used to support current and future research projects in the following areas: 1. Condition monitoring and plant lifetime prediction - assisting electrical utilities to manage plant maintenance effectively from an economic and safety viewpoint. 2. Development and optimisation of pulsed power systems - an emerging technology with applications ranging from electronic pasteurisation to plasma drilling for petroleum industries. 3. Ageing of insulation systems and new insulating materials - providing fundamental physical understanding of degradation processes and developing new materials that will lead to more compact and reliable components for electrical systems.
