Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. Invariant theory played a prominent role in nineteenth century mathematics and has Important applications to the modern disciplines of algebraic geometry and algebraic topology. Recent advances in computer technology have highlighted the importance of computational methods to the subject. It is now possible to solve problems once though to be completely inaccessible. This project deals with the invariant theory of finite groups placing particular emphasis on the challenging yet fundamental case of p-groups over a field of characteristic p. We address the problem of constructing generators and relations for the ring of invariants and we investigate the relationship between a representation and the corresponding ring of invariants. Our methods involve the use of SAGBI bases, the analog for a subalgebra of a Groebner basis, and we expect that the project will lead to a better understanding of this important aspect of computational commutative algebra.
