Summary on Grant Application Form |
Immiscible polymers can be cast from a common solvent to create self-assembling morphologies in thin films. Of particular interest here are systems in which a layered morphology develops as a result of a wetting layer or surface-directed spinodal decomposition. This type of lamellar film has applications in membranes and in functional coatings. The technique of infrared ellipsometry non - invasiely provides structural information in films with spatial resolution on the order of nanometres. Contrast between different types of polymers is provided by absorption bands at frequencies that are characteristic of the unique chemical groups in each particular polymer. I propose to develop the use of IR ellipsometry to probe the evolution of wetting layers in liquid films deposited by solventcasting and controlled evaporation of solvent. The research will explore the effects of solvent concentration gradients, vitrification, and the extent of incompatibility. The project can potentially open up a new area of study.
