SiC is a material of considerable commercial interest for the future in several different contexts. Electronic devices made from this material can be operated at high temperatures, high powers, high frequencies and in environments with high radiation levels. They are therefore capable of more efficient use of electrical power, more effective control of internal combusion engines. The material is non-toxic, environmentally stable and based on commonly occurring elements. MEMS devices based on SiC can be operated as high temperature sensors for gases and pressure. There are also significant defence applications for successful devices based on SiC. In addition SiC is a candidate material for consideration as a first wall coating in future fusion reactors. The research to be conducted with both provide practical information to those involved with the development of devices based on SiC and at the same time generate fundamental research results of the highest possible standards.
