Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project will focus on the study of 3D dynamic stall of a lifting surface (DS) as this is representative of the unsteady flow around helicopter rotors. The project will make use of available experimental data for validation purposes. At present, there are very few experiments available and a literature survey pointed out two sets of data. The first one is a PIV study by Wernert et al. and the second one is the surface pressure survey experiment of Coton and Galbraith. The combination of the two sets will provide an adequate basis of comparison both of the surface pressure loads on the maneuvering lifting surface and the velocity field and flow development around it. The turbulence modelling issues will be addressed through a comparison of Large-Eddy-Simulation results and Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes. The moderate Reynolds number of the experiments of Werner will facilitate this comparison before attempting the high Reynolds number cases of Coton and Galbraith. Suitable turbulence models for the URANS computations are to be selected based on the LES findings, as well as, the suggestions put forward by the Detached Eddy Simulation technique of Nikitin et al. and the Limited Numerical Scales approach by Batten. The core of the study will focus on the prediction of the omega-shaped dynamic stall vortex encountered in 3D DS and the compilation of a map depicting the dominant flow structures at various conditions.
