Summary on Grant Application Form |
Environmental concerns now impinge on many aspects of the school curriculum. Our intention is to make an interactive CD-ROM plotting the lifecycle of different types of building from construction, through use, to demolition, explaining the choices implied by the word `sustainability'. The results of research into the environmental aspects of building development, such as the implications of building form for energy consumption, are amenable to presentation in this way. The CD-ROM will incorporate a variety of pathways to illustrate variations within basic building types, so students will be able to make an assessment of familiar buildings from the own neighbourhood, or indeed their own school. The pros and cons of each variation will be made clear by a simple data display illustrating energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The UK has now some notable examples of `green' buildings that will be the subject of `flash movies' to animate the presentation. The CD-ROM will principally be available to schools, but will also be supplementary to a handbook, produced for an older professional audience, that will include both the background data and technical detail.
