Summary on Grant Application Form |
The rapid progress that has taken place over the last few decades in biochemistry, materials science, catalysis, pharmaceuticals production and emission control would not have been possible without remarkable advances in spectroscopic analysis. This modern aspect of chemistry has a significant impact on new technology and discoveries that is not fully appreciated at present by the general public. This educational project is designed to communicate the challenge and excitement of research in chemistry and spectroscopy to pupils in Year 12 and 13. The project will cover a range of activities, including hands-on practical sessions, Chemistry Whodunit and Greenhouse Effect, which will raise awareness and stimulate interest in the physical sciences and provide a basic knowledge of chemistry and spectroscopy. Students visits to Keele and our Proiect visits to sixth forms will be arranged. In addition, a dedicated spectroscopy web page for the project with e-links to the participating schools and key sites will be developed, hosted at Keele University. We are aiming to arrange at least 50 school trips to Keele and 20 visits to schools during the two-year period, attracting at least 2000 pupils and teachers and connecting all the participating schools to the on-line spectroscopy lab.
