Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal seeks to establish new technology for the fabrication of Bragg grating structures in optical fibres and in a range of planar photonic materials by irradiation with high-energy IR femtosecond pulses. Significant enhancements of the capabilities of grating-based photonic components are anticipated due to the large magnitude of the induced refractive index change and the nonlinear nature of the material responses, and a number of new device concepts is expected to emerge. The fundamental mechanisms will be investigated and a range of test structures produced and evaluated. Extension of the technique to phase mask definition will also be investigated.
