Summary on Grant Application Form
The Global Grid Forum has established the ACE Grid research group to explore advanced collaborative environments for e-science. This project will contribute to this work by exploring how collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) can support scientists working together within shared visualisations of scientific data. It will also show how CVEs can be extended to include data captured from sensors deployed within the real world and how scientists 'in the field' can collaborate with those back in the laboratory. Building on the Equator IRC's expertise in CVEs and wireless and mobile technologies, the project will develop infrastructure that interfaces current grid services to these kinds of future collaborative interfaces. It will demonstrate this infrastructure through two complementary applications in environmental science: the study of pollution in urban environments and the study carbon cycling in Antarctic lakes. Finally, the project will disseminate its results through public understanding of science activities for schools, colleges and the wider public, and by engaging with ACE Grid and national e-science initiatives.
