Summary on Grant Application Form
An experiment has been constructed that is capable of generating helium nano-droplets containing 100,000 atoms. Using a Knudsen cell metal vapour will be produced in a region where the atoms can be picked-up by the droplets. Coalescence of the atoms within the droplets will lead to the formation of small metallic clusters with sub-Kelvin internal temperatures. Measurements on the electronic spectra of the clusters will provide for the first time high resolution information on the ordering of electronic energy levels. The experiments will begin with silver clusters for which there have been accurate theoretical studies of structure and energy levels. Subsequent experiments will study first row transition metals. Once the positions of the energy levels have been established, further experiments will examine the influence of absorbed molecules, such as NO and CO.
