Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our objective is to understand the quantum limits for state comparison. This is linked to the idea of state discrimination, which is the optimal determination of the state of a quantum system among a known set of possible states. The difference is that we suppose that we have two quantum systems and wish to determine only whether the states are the same or different. It is not necessary that this should also tell us the state of the two systems. We invisage the possibility of an optical implementation involving photon pairs from a parametric downconversion source. The idea would be to devise a passive linear optical device that could realise optimal quantum state comparison. We hope that a suitably simple design would be implemented in the Strathclyde group led by Dr Riis.
