The proposal is to invite Prof. Ishida (Nihon University, Japan) to spend two months collaborating with Inglesfield and Crampin, in the application of his new embedding method to surface electronic structure problems. The determination of the embedding potential has always been difficult for surface problems with a large surface unit cell, or when the spacing between atomic layers is small - the new embedding scheme of Ishida seems to remove these problems, opening up the way to an embedding study of open surfaces, stepped surfaces, and complex adsorbate structures. During the course of the visit it is hoped to start the development of a new surface and interface code incorporating the new method. 1t is expected that the new method will be relevant to the electronic structure of nanostructures, and this will be explored during this visit.
