Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. The application of FACTS controllers in power systems can be categorised into three main control objectives: power flow control, voltage regulation or support and stability improvement. So far, the focus of the investigation into the interactions of multiple FACTS controllers has been mainly on one of the control objectives, i.e., one of the control functions, of FACTS controllers - stability (oscillation stability) control. This project will investigate the interactions and co-ordination of multiple FACTS controllers, relating to two more important control functions of FACTS controllers - power flow and voltage control. Four typical FACTS controllers will be considered in the project: SVC, STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compensatory, TCSC('Thyristor Controlled Series Compensatory and UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller). The tasks of the project are to study: (1) the interactions of TCSC and UPFC power flow control function; (2) the interactions of SVC, STATCOM and UPFC voltage control function. In situations where the interactions are significant, (which will be detrimental to the normal operation of these FACTS controllers), co-ordination schemes will be proposed. The project will be pursued by the investigators at the University of Bath, UK, jointly with the collaborators at Southeast University, Zhejiang University, Hohai University and Tianjin University, China. The joint effort put into the project will enable to promote and consolidate the existing research collaborations and forge new relationships between the University of Bath and the 4 universities in China.
