This proposal seeks access, through the 'core plus' funding mechanism, to the ISIS powder neutron diffractometers Polaris, HRPD, Pearl and GEM to support our research programme in solid-state chemistry. This suite of instruments provides an unrivalled combination of resolution, count rate and range which will permit a variety of problems to be investigated. These will include determination of cation ordering schemes, to which electronic and magnetic properties are especially sensitive, magnetic structure determination, structural changes induced by the application of high temperatures and/or pressures and structurally-driven electronic transitions. Other than the facility cost, the only additional resources requested are a modest amount of technical support for the fabrication of quartz ampoules at Heriot-Watt, together with funds for those consumables directly associated with the neutron experiments and not provided by the facility. The level of consumables funding is identical with that made available by the facility for proposals awarded beam time through the direct access route.
