Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal outlines a programme of work between two of the computer-centric IRCs in the context of the UK e-Science initiative. The domainof application is collaborative medical problem solving using knowledge services provided via the e-Science Grid infrastructure. In particular, the initial focus will be Triple Assessment in symptomatic focal breast disease. The domain has been chosen because it contains a number of characteristics that make it especially valuable as a common focus for the IRC e-Science research agenda. These include; large amounts of complex data, information and knowledge necessary to inform decision making, computationally intensive image and signal interpretation problems, collaborative and distributed nature of the task, little current support for the knowledge based management of content. In this proposal we seek to extend the research ambitions of the AKT (Advanced Knowledge Technologies) and MIAS (Medical Imaging and Signals) IRCs to include researching the provision of AKT and MIAS technologies in a Grid services context. Although this work focuses on medical applications we consider the majority of the research to have generic applicability to many e-Science areas.
