SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words. This proposal centres on the design and implementation of an Optical Packet Switched (OPS) node with the associated network management, which will function as a topological and logical interface between the service and the optical transport network (OTN). The proposed OPS router will be an edge networ element able to aggregate the traffic from IP routers and ATM switches, based on quality of service (QoS) requirements, to a number of dedicated wavelengtl of the OTN. Furthemore, the OPS router will offer improved service granularity and will provide isolation between the service and the optical transport domains. The edge OPS device has the potential to replace Terabit routers as a more scalable, efficient and future proof solution. The research detailed here represents the first ever study addressing this application for optical packet switching. The work will benefit from research experience gained under the European project DAVID and the EPSRC programs WASPNET, OWN and OPSNET. The investigators and the industrial partner, Marconi pie, have the necessary range of expertise and a clear understanding of the relative merits and disadvantages of different routes to future network expansion, allowing the application under investigation to be driven by realistic network requirements. The areas of research can be subdivided as follows: the OPS node architectur and network design studies, the label-swapping/switching software implementation and validation, the hardware realisation and demonstration.
