Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to research the issues relating to the design, development and testing of a novel surgical tool and its associated support system. The tool is intended as a bone-cutting device able to be deployed by a surgical-assist robot, and able to obtain access to difficult and constrained sites. It is also intended to investigate the design problems associated with a bone cutting device having a reconfigurable geometry so that the cutting profile can change to meet the needs of the particular procedure. The basic principle of operation of the tool will be ultrasonic cutting, which will minimise the reaction forces caused by the cutting process. This will render the tool able to be easily and precisely deployed by a robot arm.
