Flightdeck IT cannot be examined, nor the consequent performance of crew be understood, without study of flightdeck-air traffic control (FD-ATC) collaboration. Such study requires a joint cognitive systems perspective, and one which accounts for social performance and setting as much as cognitive behaviour. This research will examine FD-ATC collaboration in the light of two IT choices of the future - the balance between voice and datalink communications and the appropriate level of task delegation, from ATCO-led to freeflight.A mixed methodological approach is proposed, embracing experimental, quasi-experimental, simulation and field studies. Given current security concerns, provision has been made for alternative approaches if field study, in the cockpit or at air traffic control centres, becomes impossible.The research starts with no preconceptions about any technology choice, except for the position - borne out by experience - that human factors will be critical to understanding the gains and problems of different flightdeck IT. Well founded and contextually relevant human factors research will thus be central to the implementation of systems which enhance the efficiency and relaibility of FD-ATC collaboration, and the safety of civil aircraft.
