The prospect is emerging of a new technology based on the flow and interaction of atoms above a microfabricated silicon chip. Although far from the market place, this technology clearly has the potential to be as powerful as integrated electronics has been for controlling electrons or integrated optics for controlling light. The atom chip promises to combine the long quantum coherence times of trapped atoms (at least seconds and possibly minutes) with the sub-microsecond interaction times of atoms and light, and to give access to the full power of quantum superposition and entanglement as the basis for new instruments. Physicists know in general terms the kinds of structures they might be able to use for these quantum manipulations, but the designs are so far very rudimentary and the structures are mostly rather different from what has been developed in the main stream of nanofabrication. The necessary development can only proceed through an extended interaction between the basic physicists and the fabricators to discover structures that are both feasible and important for building atom chips. This proposal links the leading UK group in atom micromanipulation and the leading UK silicon fabricators in a common project to develop atom chips on silicon.
